Epilepsy auras
\nAn ‘aura’ is the term that some people use to describe the warning they feel before they have a tonic clonic seizure. An epilepsy ‘aura’ is in fact a focal aware seizure.<\/p>\n
Focal aware seizures (FAS) are sometimes called \u2018warnings\u2019 or \u2018auras\u2019 because, for some people, a FAS develops into another type of seizure. The FAS is therefore sometimes a warning that another seizure will happen (see focal to bilateral tonic-clonic seizures).<\/p>\n
Some people may describe their auras as:<\/p>\n
\u2022 a \u2018rising\u2019 feeling in the stomach or d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu (feeling like you\u2019ve \u2018been here before\u2019);<\/p>\n
\u2022 getting an unusual smell or taste;<\/p>\n
\u2022 a sudden intense feeling of fear or joy;<\/p>\n
\u2022 a strange feeling like a \u2018wave\u2019 going through the head;<\/p>\n
\u2022 stiffness or twitching in part of the body, (such as an arm or hand);<\/p>\n
\u2022 a feeling of numbness or tingling;<\/p>\n
\u2022 a sensation that an arm or leg feels bigger or smaller than it actually is; or<\/p>\n
\u2022 visual disturbances such as coloured or flashing lights or hallucinations (seeing something that isn\u2019t actually there).<\/p>\n
